Theme: English For Academic Purposes (EAP): Developing Academic Readers And Writers

Session 1: 10 am – 10:55 am – Academic Reading Circles, presented by Tyson Seburn (University of Toronto)

We will explore how academic adaptations of literature circles transform reading struggles for EAP learners into engagement with material and consequently stronger comprehension. Together, we will investigate practical examples of noticing vocabulary patterns, thinking critically, making meaningful connections and ultimately improving text comprehension in this individual and collaborative activity.

Session 2: 11:00 am-12:00 pm – Teaching and Assessing Writing in Advanced Level English for Academic Purposes Classes, presented by Yaw Amoah-Gyampoh (University of Winnipeg)

This presentation will explore some useful tasks and strategies to assist advanced level EAP writing students in preparing to meet the challenges of writing in a Canadian post-secondary environment.  We will also look at ways of providing effective feedback and assessment to students.
